Harris
County's new Flood Insurance Rate Maps became effective on June 18,
2007. At that time, many Houston property owners learned that they were
now required by their mortgage companies to carry flood insurance because they were in a
high-risk zone. Others may decide to voluntarily acquire flood insurance
based on the new, more accurate flood plain data. Eventually, insurance
rates may change for those who already have flood insurance based on the
County's new maps. In order to determine your proper
insurance rate, all insurance companies will require that property owners in the
updated flood plain obtain a new FEMA Elevation Certificate
